Project Description

The Hutt Valley Disabled Resource Trust Centre (HVDRT) TriAbility Triathlon on 15 March was a roaring success for the nine-strong Community Connections team. Inclusion was the theme for the day with two current staff and one ex-staff member competing and completing alongside the six people they support.

Over 100 competitors took part in the triathlon competing in two distances. The Valley distance consisted of a 350 m swim, 11km bike ride and a 2.5km run. We had two teams in this category and one solo entrant. Trish McQueen completed the 350m swim and the 2.5km run, with Adrian Jerymn holding up the cycle leg. Adrian was also the youngest competitor in the event and the pair came a respectable second in their category!

Our next team of three: Racheal Thompson (350m swim), Luke Alefosio (11km bike) and Adele Davidson (2.5km run) outdid themselves by coming a respectable 20th place. And staff member Melissa Beasly competing in the solo event took out overall second place!

The Coastal distance saw three solo competitors from Community Connections complete the 700m swim, 20km bike and 5km run. Our own Nathan Millar came fourth in the men’s category with a brilliant time of 1hr 43mins and Glenn Buglass-Devereux taking out third. But, not to be outdone, ex-staff member Hannah Buglass-Devereux was second overall!

A big well done to everyone for taking part and doing their best – the hours of training and organising themselves certainly paid off!

A special mention goes out to our gutsy Trish who won the big spot prize of a bike. Without blinking an eye, she unselfishly asked for it to be drawn again as she has no need for a bike and received rapturous applause for her generosity! Well done Trish! The lucky recipient of the new bike was seen riding home with a giant smile, legs pedalling madly! I did wonder if he lived locally?!
